Common Questions

Electrical Rewiring & Switchboard Upgrades — FAQs

What Are the Signs My House Needs Rewiring?

Common warning signs are flickering lights, fuses that blow or breakers that trip often, warm or discoloured outlets, a burning smell, and cloth or rubber-insulated wiring in older Dunedin homes. A fuse board rather than a modern switchboard with RCDs is another flag. If you spot any of these, book an inspection before it becomes a fire or shock risk.

How Much Does a Switchboard Upgrade Cost?

A switchboard upgrade in Dunedin typically runs from around $1,500 to $3,500, depending on the size of the board, the number of circuits and how much remedial work the existing wiring needs. A full house rewire is a larger job. We assess your setup on site and give a fixed-price quote, so you know exactly what it costs before any work begins.

What Are RCDs and Do I Need Them?

RCDs, or residual current devices, are safety switches that cut the power in a fraction of a second if they detect a fault, which protects you from electrocution and reduces fire risk. Older fuse boards usually do not have them. Modern AS/NZS 3000 standards expect RCD protection, so we fit them as part of any switchboard upgrade.

How Long Does a Rewire or Switchboard Upgrade Take?

A switchboard upgrade is often done in a day. A full house rewire takes longer, usually several days to a week or more depending on the size of the home and whether you are living in it during the work. We plan the job to minimise the time your power is off and keep you informed at each stage.

Why Is Old Wiring a Risk?

Older wiring degrades over time. Cloth and rubber insulation cracks and crumbles, connections loosen, and old boards lack the safety features now considered standard. That raises the risk of shocks and electrical fires, and can cause problems with insurance. Bringing the system up to current standards protects your home and the people in it.

Do I Get a Certificate of Compliance for the Work?

Yes. Rewiring and switchboard work is prescribed electrical work, so it is completed by our EWRB-licensed electricians, fully tested, and issued with a Certificate of Compliance. That certificate is your proof the work meets current standards, and it is often required by insurers and for rental properties.
