Does my home need rewiring? - 22nd Oct 2015

Does my home need rewiring?

How do I know whether my home needs to be rewired?

Insulated wires used in homes prior to the 1970’s has been found to deteriorate over the years, resulting in potentially dangerous exposed wires.
Along with the age of your property here are a few indicators that your home may need rewiring…
  • Plugs and sockets become hot to touch after or during use
  • Discoloured, scorch marks around plugs and sockets
  • Fuses blowing or circuit breakers tripping regularly for no reason
  • Flickering lights and blown bulbs

Why should I rewire my home?

Older wiring can cause a number of problems in your home, including blown fuses, blown light bulbs, damaged appliances and in the worst case scenario, electrocution and fire.
Often you will need to provide proof that your home has been rewired if you are seeking insurance, applying for a home loan, selling your property, or renting it out.

If you have any concerns, contact Darren today to arrange a wiring inspection and report. It’s better to be safe, than sorry!

Solar power myths busted - 21st Oct 2015

Solar panels even work on cloudy days and in the winter
People always ask "what happens when it's not sunny?" and "will my solar power still work in winter?" The answer is yes to both.

Solar power is not reliant on heat, only sunlight and UV rays. Solar panels will even work in fog and on cloudy days - perfect for the Dunedin climate!

The amount of power generated will depend on the thickness of the fog or cloud but at its worst, your panels might produce only 5-10% of the energy they normally do. Even if you live in an area with lots of foggy days, what really matters is how much sunshine your roof receives over the course of a whole year, not on a given day.
